About HPM

HPM is the International Study Group on the Relations between History and Pedagogy of Mathematics affiliated to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI).
By combining the history of mathematics with the teaching and learning of mathematics, HPM is the link between the past and the future of mathematics. Therefore, the group aims at stressing the conception of mathematics as a living science, a science with a long history, a vivid present and an as yet unforeseen future.
Among members of the group are researchers in mathematics education, mathematicians, historians of mathematics, teachers of mathematics and curriculum developers.

ACTIVITIES

ICME Satellite Meetings of HPM
Among the activities of the HPM Group, there is the tradition of organizing conferences that are satellite meetings to the International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME), organized by ICMI every four years. We list below these meetings:

1984 ICME-5 (Adelaide, Australia), satellite meeting in Adelaide
1988 ICME-6 (Budapest, Hungary), satellite meeting in Florence (Italy)
1992 ICME-7 (Quebec, Canada), satellite meeting in Toronto,(Canada)
1996 ICME-8 (Seville, Spain), satellite meeting in Braga (Portugal) conjointly with the 2nd European Summer University in History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education
2000 ICME-9 (Tokyo-Makuhari, Japan), satellite meeting in Taipei (Taiwan)
2004 ICME-10 (Copenhagen, Denmark), satellite meeting in Uppsala (Sweden) conjointly with the 4th European Summer University in History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education
2008 ICME-11 (Monterrey, Mexico), satellite meeting in Mexico City (Mexico)

The following volumes were published after the previous HPM satellite meetings:
- Calinger, R. (editor): 1996, Vita mathematica, MAA Notes n.40. (HPM 1992)

European Summer University on the History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education

Another major international activity of the HPM Group is the organization of the European Summer University on the History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education (ESU).
The initiative of organizing such a Summer University belongs to the French Mathematics Education community of the IREMs, in the early 1980ís. From those meetings emerged the organization of a SU on a European scale.
We list below these ES:

1993, 19-23 July, First ESU, Montpellier, France
1996, 24-30 July, Second ESU, Braga, Portugal (conjointly with the ICME-8 Satellite Meeting of HPM)
1999, 15-21
July, Third ESU, Leuven & Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium
2004, 12-17
July, Fourth ESU, Uppsala, Sweden (conjointly with the ICME-10 Satellite Meeting of HPM)
2007, 19-24 July, Fifth ESU, Prague, Czech Republic
2010, 19-23 July, Sixth ESU, Vienna, Austria

More information on the last ESU can be found in the
First Announcement and the Second Announcement
and in its website http://www.algebra.tuwien.ac.at/esu6
which will be regularly updated.

The following volumes were published after the previous ESU:

- F. Lalande, F. Jaboeuf, and Y. Nouazé (eds), 1995: Actes de la première Université dí Été Européenne sur lí Histoire et Épistémologie dans lí Éducation Mathématique, IREM de Montpellier, Université Montpellier II, Montpelier, France, (598 pages in one volume)
- M.J. Lagarto, A. Viera & E. Veloso (eds),
1996: Proceedings of the 2nd European Summer University on the History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education and the ICME 8 Satellite Meeting of HPM,  Portuguese Association of the Teachers of Mathematics & Department of Mathematics, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, (813 pages in two volumes).
- P. Radelet-de-Grave & C. Brichard (eds), 2001:  Proceedings of the 3rd European Summer University on the History and Epistemology in Mathematics Education, Université Catholique de Louvain, Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (944 pages in two volumes).

HISTORY OF THE HPM GROUP

On the occasion of the 25th years of the group John Fauvel and Florence Fasanelli planned to write a history of the HPM.
The final version of the text was prepared by Florence Fasanelli after John has passed away in 2001, and has been published in the
Proceedings of HPM 2004 & ESU 4: ICME 10 Satellite Meeting of the HPM Group & Fourth  European Summer University  on the History and Epistemology in  Mathematics Education, edited by Furinghetti, F., Kaisjer, S., & Tzanakis, C. University of Crete, Greece, 2006, pp.x-xxviii.
It is entitled

An account of what has been done in the last few years, is included in the Quadrennial Report 2004-2008, which is a slightly updated version of the report that appeared in the ICMI Bulletin No 62, Jume 2008
