This event is the result of a Z decay into a muon and an anti-muon. Muons are particles in all ways identical to electrons, except that their mass is about 200 times greater. Because of their greater mass, muons are more penetrating than electrons and are not stopped by calorimeters. They reach the muon chambers where they are visible as small squares.
